The Woodlow Mansion (part one)

"Tyler Brody," Shannon said, slapping a release form on the counter. "Get him out here now."

The nurse sputtered, "I-I don't think--"

"Don't think," Shannon snapped. "Just do it. Your boss signed the papers himself. There's no reason for you to deny us. I don't think Mr. Raymond would appreciate being called away from his Friday morning golf game because his incompetent staff can't do their jobs, but I'll call him if I have to."

Shannon lifted her cell in a silent threat.

"I like your style," Johnny whispered in her ear from behind. Her husband and his partner were content to let her do the work on this one.

She fought back the satisfied smile threatening to lift the corners of her mouth. This was not the time to gloat. She had to remain tough and in control or they would lose Tyler forever. Leaving the country without him was unthinkable.

For two months they'd tried every logical avenue available to them in an attempt to get Tyler released from the Greenbrooke Sanitarium. Nothing worked. Every plea to see him was met with cold, blunt refusal. So they'd done it the illegal way. The papers were real, but her husband and his partner had used force to get the signed. At least Mr. Raymond had given in before Johnny followed through and broke both his knee caps.

Johnny and Nick flanked her in dark suits and Secret-Service-type sunglasses. Alleged racketeers, they wore an aura of danger along with the suits and glasses. If Shannon hadn't known them both since grade school, she would have been running for cover.

The nurse picked up the phone and whispered a few brisk words into the receiver. Although Shannon hoped the woman was calling for Tyler, she wasn't surprised when an elderly man in white approached on fast feet.

"I'm Dr. Mosley," the gray-haired man said, sticking his hand out.  "Tyler Brody is my patient. I understand you want us to release him into your custody? Is that correct?"

Johnny looked at the extended hand with distaste, while Nick remained statue-still, not even glancing down at it. After clearing his throat, the doctor lowered his hand. He turned a phony smile in Shannon's direction. It only took him a split-second to realize he was standing in front of literature royalty. The smile turned genuine, and the man actually blushed.

"Hey, aren't you that writer?"

It was a tired mantra she'd come to expect at the worst of times, even when she was doing personal business in a public restroom.

She forced an answering smile and raised thin shoulders. "In the flesh."

"My wife is never going to believe I met you. She's read all your books."

Any second the man would ask for her autograph. She snatched the papers from the counter and handed them to the doctor. "As I was telling the nurse here, these papers were signed by Mr. Raymond himself. Tyler's parents had no right to commit him. Despite what they may have told you, Lucy's death was not his fault."
Come back tomorrow for part 2 of The Woodlow Mansion.
